How Specsoff works

  • 2-minute letter testRead one line of letters aloud (or tap / type). The chart adapts to you and finds your blur level at your screen distance.
  • Or use your prescriptionEnter SPH / CYL / AXIS / ADD, or scan a photo or PDF of it. It is read on your device.
  • Face-tracked distanceThe camera checks you are centred at about 60 cm and starts the test by itself. Video never leaves your device.
  • Tuned viewText size, contrast and sharpening are adjusted to your result, and you compare the options side by side.
  • 6 languages, voice guideSpoken step-by-step guidance; letters or Tumbling E charts.
  • Private by designResults stay in your browser. Download a report if you want one.
Readability aid, not a medical device. Specsoff does not correct, diagnose or treat vision. The letter test is a screening estimate, not a clinical eye examination. It helps only mild blur (about 1–2 dioptres at your viewing distance), blocks spectacle powers beyond ±3 D and is for adults 18+. It does not replace your glasses or an eye examination. Sudden changes in vision need urgent care from an eye-care professional.

How to use

How to read your screen without glasses using Specsoff

Specsoff is a beta screen readability tool for people with mild blur who need to read a laptop or phone screen without glasses for a while, for example when you forgot your glasses at work or they broke. It works out the best viewing distance for your spectacle power, enlarges text, raises contrast and applies a gentle pre-sharpen. It helps only mild blur (about 1–2 dioptres) and does not correct vision.

  1. Step 01

Read the notice and confirm you are 18 or over

The tool is a readability aid for adults, not an eye test or a medical device. Accept the notice to continue.

  2. Step 02

    Enter your spectacle power

Type the sphere, cylinder and axis for each eye from your last prescription, your age and how far you sit from the screen. Powers beyond ±3 D are blocked, because software cannot help enough there.

Tip: Your eye power is on your glasses prescription; ask your optician if you do not have it.

  3. Step 03

Calibrate your screen with a bank card

Hold any bank or ID card against the screen and drag the slider until the box matches its width. Letter sizes are then true to size at your distance.

  4. Step 04

Lock your viewing distance with the camera (optional)

Turn on the camera to measure how far your eyes are from the screen. The reading chart pauses if you move out of the zone and resumes once you are steady. Video never leaves your device.

Tip: No camera, or you would rather not? Use manual distance; results are marked as manual.

  5. Step 05

Compare the chart with the aids on and off

Pick Snellen rows, random letters, numbers or stepped font sizes, choose one eye or both, and switch the readability aids on and off. Adjust pre-sharpen, text size and contrast until reading is comfortable.

  6. Step 06

Read a row aloud and send feedback

Press Read row aloud and read the letters; the tool scores the row. Save notes in the feedback panel and export them as JSON.

Questions about Specsoff

Still stuck? Contact us and we'll help.

Can I read my screen without glasses with this tool?

Sometimes, if your blur is mild. For about 1–2 dioptres at your viewing distance, the right distance, larger text, higher contrast and a gentle pre-sharpen can make text comfortable to read. For stronger powers, use your glasses.

Does it correct my vision?

No. It changes how the screen looks; it does not change your eyes, does not correct vision and is not a medical device or an eye test. It does not replace glasses, contact lenses or an eye examination.

Who should not use it?

Children under 18, anyone with a spectacle power beyond ±3 D sphere, and anyone with sudden vision changes, eye pain, headaches or double vision. These need an eye-care professional.

Is the camera video uploaded?

No. The face model runs in your browser to measure the distance to your eyes. Frames are not recorded, stored or sent anywhere.

Why does it say mild blur only?

A normal flat screen cannot focus light for your eye the way a lens does. Research shows software pre-sharpening only helps about 1–2 dioptres before text loses too much contrast; bigger gains need special light-field display hardware.

Can I use my phone or laptop without glasses every day with this?

It is meant for short spells, such as when you forgot or broke your glasses. Stop if your eyes feel strained, and keep wearing your prescribed glasses for regular use.
